I attended the GitHub Universe 2022 Watch Party in Sri Lanka at Microsoft Sri Lanka on November 19, 2022. This is a very special event for me because it is the first tech community event I’ve ever attended. I learned a lot and had a great time. So I’d like to share my experience from the registration process to the event’s end.

I got this fantastic opportunity, but that’s also a surprise for me because I accidentally saw someone’s post on LinkedIn about the GitHub Universe Sri Lanka 2022 event registration. I’ve been using GitHub for over a year. At that moment, I honestly had no idea what this event was about, and I wasn’t even aware that GitHub hosts it every year. But when I saw that post, I decided in my mind that I must go to that event to gain some new experience. because I’d never been to a community event like this before. So I filled out the form and registered for the event, and they mentioned that only a limited number of people could attend in person and others could attend virtually. At that moment, I really didn’t have that much hope that I’d get an opportunity like this. However, on November 18, 2022, I received an email invitation to that event. That made me so happy. However, I was a little nervous about going because I didn’t know anyone else who would be attending the event.

The event took place at Microsoft Sri Lanka, which is located in Access Tower II in Colombo. On the event day, I went there by bus. Finally, I went there with the help of Google Maps because I was a little confused about the address. For security reasons, everyone must fill out some information at the access tower’s entrance, such as their name, address, contact number, NIC number, and arrival date in the record book. After that, I went to the 22nd floor, where the Microsoft Sri Lanka office is located. I was a little nervous when I saw new people, but after a few minutes, I felt comfortable. Then they started to verify everyone using the name list of registered people. They gave us some nice stickers and pen before we entered the event room.

The event began around 10.45 a.m. with virtual sessions such as the GitHub universe keynote and how GitHub builds GitHub and how GitHub copilots developer happiness. I really enjoyed the sessions and gained a lot of knowledge about GitHub. Some interesting topics are shared by experienced IT professionals and GitHub campus experts in between each virtual session.

Then they gave us a small break in the afternoon to relax and take photos. We took group photos and selfies.

Then the next quiz session was held after the break. All of the questions in the quiz were about GitHub and what they discussed during the event. This session was also useful for me. For the first, second, and third quiz winners, they gave them gifts.

Finally, all of the events concluded, and everyone’s eagerly anticipated afternoon meal arrived. because everyone was hungry, and me too😂

and I had my lunch and took the last photo at the Microsoft Sri Lanka office entrance.

I’d like to give some advice to beginners in the tech industry.

  1. Whatever new opportunity comes your way, just grab it and don’t be afraid.
  2. You must meet new people, share your experiences, and gain the knowledge of others too.
  3. Try to attend community events because it gives us different experiences for our career development.

This article is written specifically for undergraduates who want to improve their knowledge and get fantastic experience. This event taught me a lot. I’ve been using GitHub for over a year. But I learned a lot from that event about GitHub’s new features and all. It really helped me with my career development. My final piece of advice is to grab opportunities without hesitation. because if you miss, you will feel guilty. However, if you take advantage of the opportunity, you will undoubtedly gain numerous benefits for your passion.
